Why fly to the Nederlands when you can see Dutch-level tulips in Washington State? Every April, the Skagit Valley farmland transforms into a spectacle of glowing reds, yellows, pinks and purples. The star of the show is RoozenGaarde, spanning more than 50 acres with millions of bulbs, 150 tulip varieties and a classic windmill. The Dutch connection is real: the Roozen family has grown tulips in Holland and the United States since the early 1700s. Wander more farms to find trolley rides and a beer and wine garden at Tulip Town, or cut your own bouquet at Tulip Valley Farms' u-pick fields. Then head into the waterfront town of La Conner, which hosts an old-fashioned parade with marching bands, farm animals and pampered pets. The valley sits about 90 km north of Seattle just off I-5, making it an easy, budget-friendly day trip. Just wear boots or waterproof shoes, because mud comes with the territory. All the Keukenhof vibes, no passport required.
